67W: Apple's number, and why it is 67 and not 65.

67W exists because Apple runs its laptop rail at 20.5V rather than 20V. Multiply 20.5V by 3.27A and you get 67W — the brick that ships in the box with the base-chip MacBook Pro 14″ and, as a build-to-order option, with the MacBook Air.

The profile

Apple's 67W USB-C Power Adapter advertises four fixed rails: 5.2V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/3A and 20.5V/3.27A. The first three are why it charges an iPhone or iPad at full speed; the fourth is the laptop rail. Because 3.27A is above the 3A cable limit, the full 67W requires an e-marked cable — Apple's USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable qualifies, as does any 5A USB-C to USB-C lead. Third-party chargers almost never say 67W. They say 65W, because they run 20V × 3.25A. The 2W difference is inside measurement noise and no Mac behaves differently on one versus the other — the practical guidance on the 65W page applies to both.

The rule Apple applies: fast charge is a wattage tier, not a percentage. The 14″ MacBook Pro reaches its 50%-in-30-minutes claim only on a 96W or 140W adapter, which is exactly why the 96W step exists.

Do not pay a premium for the number. Any compliant 65W adapter charges a base MacBook Pro 14″ at 97% of the stock brick's rate. The genuine upgrade is not 67 → 70, it is 67 → 96, because that is where Apple's fast-charge threshold sits.

FAQ

Is 65W the same as 67W?

In practice, yes. Apple gets 67W from 20.5V × 3.27A; third parties get 65W from 20V × 3.25A. Both satisfy the same laptops, and macOS reports no difference in charging behaviour.

Does the 67W adapter fast-charge a MacBook Pro 14-inch?

No. Apple's fast-charge claim for the 14-inch requires the 96W or 140W adapter. The 67W charges the machine normally, it just does not hit the 50%-in-30-minutes tier.

Can I charge an iPhone with a 67W adapter?

Yes, safely. The iPhone requests a 9V contract and pulls roughly 20-27W; the adapter supplies exactly that and nothing more.
