Higher efficiency is why GaN runs cooler, and running cooler is what allows the shrink — less internal volume is needed to dissipate waste heat. Safety is unchanged: certification (UL/ETL), not semiconductor material, is what protects you. Deep dive: GaN chargers explained.

Where the shrink actually pays off

The size win scales with wattage, which is why the five tier pages below are organised by watts rather than by brand. At 30W a GaN unit saves you a few grams over silicon — nice, not decisive. At 65W the difference is a folding-plug brick you forget is in your bag versus a laptop puck with a captive cable. At 100W and 140W GaN is effectively the only way to get three or four ports into a single wall socket, and at 240W it is the only way the PD 3.1 desk class exists at all. That is also why GaN and multi-port designs arrived together: the freed internal volume went into extra USB-C ports rather than into a smaller box.

Thermal reality check: a GaN brick's small surface area is its only cooling. Charging a laptop at full load inside a padded sleeve, under a pillow, or behind a couch will trigger thermal throttling long before anything unsafe happens — you just get 40W out of a 65W adapter and blame the cable. Leave one open side.

Is GaN charging safe for my phone's battery?

Yes — GaN changes the adapter's internal switching, not what your device receives. The output is standard USB-C PD, identical to a silicon charger's.

Why are GaN chargers more expensive?

Gallium nitride wafers cost more than silicon, but the gap has collapsed: 30W GaN units now start under $15. Above 45W, GaN is usually cheaper per watt once you factor in ports.

Do GaN chargers get hot?

Warm under sustained full load is normal; too-hot-to-hold is not, and on a certified unit it triggers thermal shutdown rather than failure.
