Wattage · The cable ceiling

60W: the last wattage any USB-C cable can carry.

60W is 20V × 3A, and 3A is the most current a plain USB-C cable is permitted to move. That is why 60W — not 65W, not 45W — became the first laptop-class step in USB-C: every cable in the drawer could deliver it.

Why 60W is a hard line, not a round number

A USB-C cable with no e-marker chip is limited to 3A by the specification. At the 20V rail that works out to exactly 60W, and every step above it needs a cable that identifies its own current rating to the charger: 65W is 3.25A, 96W is 4.7A, 100W is 5A. The rails underneath matter as much as the headline. A compliant 60W adapter also advertises 5V/3A, 9V/3A and 15V/3A, which is what a phone, a pair of earbuds or a Nintendo Switch dock (15V/2.6A) actually consume. Wattage is a ceiling, never a dose — the device names its own contract through USB-C Power Delivery.

Blame the cable first. If a laptop charges slowly on a 60W brick, the usual culprit is a charge-only USB 2.0 lead that never negotiates the 20V rail at all — those cap out around 12W regardless of what the adapter can supply.

Buying the 60W step in 2026

Almost nobody sells a 60W adapter any more. GaN pushed the same physical size to 65W, so the shelf reality is that you buy 65W hardware and use it as your 60W replacement — the extra 5W costs nothing and covers the 3.25A ultrabooks.

Size up, or stand down

Size up to 65W if your laptop's stock adapter says 65W — the 5W gap is small, but it is the difference between charging at full rate and charging at 92% of it under load. Size up to 100W if a MacBook Pro 14″ or a 15″ MacBook Air is in the mix, or if you want one brick to also feed a phone at the same time.

FAQ

Is a 60W charger enough for a MacBook Pro 14-inch?

It will charge it, including while you work on light tasks, but it is below the 67W the base model ships with and well below the 96W fast-charge spec. Expect the battery to gain slowly, or even drift down, during sustained compiles or video exports.

Do I need a special cable for 60W?

No. 60W is 20V at 3A, which is exactly the limit of a standard non-e-marked USB-C cable. Anything above 60W needs an e-marked cable that declares a 5A rating.

Why do so few chargers say 60W now?

GaN made 65W fit in the same shell for the same cost, and 65W covers the 20V/3.25A ultrabooks that 60W just misses. Manufacturers standardised upward; 60W survives mainly as a per-port rating inside multi-port units.
