Rails, current, and the cable it demands
The Apple 96W adapter offers 5.2V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/3A and 20.5V/4.7A. That 4.7A top rail is well past the 3A a bare USB-C cable may carry, so 96W is strictly e-marked-cable territory: a 5A-rated USB-C to USB-C lead, or Apple's USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. When to size up, when it is overkill
Overkill for a MacBook Air or an ultrabook: those cap at 35–70W, so 65W or 70W saves money and bulk with no measurable loss. Not enough for a 16″ MacBook Pro, which asks for 140W and only reaches its fast-charge tier there — go to 140W. Exactly right for a 14″ MacBook Pro, or for one brick that has to cover a Pro laptop plus a phone.

Is a 100W charger the same as Apple's 96W?
For every practical purpose, yes. Apple reaches 96W at 20.5V/4.7A; third parties reach 100W at 20V/5A, the maximum the pre-EPR standard allows. Both clear the MacBook Pro 14-inch fast-charge threshold.
Can a 96W adapter charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro?
Yes, it charges it completely. It will not fast-charge it, and during sustained heavy work the battery can hold steady or drop slightly rather than gain, because the machine can ask for up to 140W.
Why does my 96W charger only deliver 60W?
The cable. Anything above 60W needs an e-marked cable declaring a 5A rating; without it the charger holds at the 20V/3A contract.
