Thirty watts is easy to build in silicon — it has been done for a decade. What gallium nitride changes at this tier is size: a 30W GaN charger fits the footprint that used to hold 20W, so you gain 50% more power without giving up a pocket.
The numbers at 30W
Efficiency drives everything about charger size. A power supply's waste heat is the output multiplied by the reciprocal of efficiency, minus the output. At a typical silicon conversion efficiency of 89%, a 30W adapter dissipates about 3.7W as heat. A GaN design running at 94% dissipates about 1.9W — roughly half. Halving the heat halves the internal volume needed to shed it, which is why the class leaders at this tier weigh around an ounce and fold their pins flat.

Who 30W is for
Thirty watts is a phone-and-small-tablet number, and it covers that job with margin:
- iPhone — peaks around 20–27W depending on model, so 30W is the honest ceiling with headroom
- Galaxy S25 / S24 base — 25W via PPS, fully covered if the unit advertises a PPS profile
- iPad and iPad Air — around 30W, exactly on the number
- Pixel and most Android flagships — high-20s peak
- Meta Quest 3 — 18W
- Nintendo Switch — 39W, so 30W charges it but not at full docked draw

Is a 30W GaN charger safe for an iPhone?
Yes. The phone negotiates its own draw over USB-C Power Delivery and takes only what it asks for, so extra adapter capacity is never forced onto it.
Does 30W GaN charge faster than 30W silicon?
No. Both deliver the same 30W to the device. GaN wins on size, heat and efficiency, not on charge speed.
Will 30W run a MacBook Air?
It will charge one, slowly, and will not trigger the Air's fast-charge mode. A 35W or 65W adapter is the right match.
Do 30W GaN chargers support PPS?
Many do, but not all. If a Galaxy phone is the main device, confirm the listing states PPS rather than only PD.
