65W GaN: the tier where the size difference stops being subtle.
Apple's old 61W silicon brick occupied roughly 190 cm³. A 65W GaN charger doing the same job occupies about 65 cm³ — a third of the volume, usually with more ports. This is the wattage where gallium nitride stopped being a specification and became a reason to repack your bag.
Why 65W is the GaN inflection point
Waste heat scales with output. At 89% efficiency a 65W silicon supply throws off roughly 8W of heat at full load; at 94% a GaN design throws off about 4.1W. Four watts is the difference between needing a large aluminium-backed enclosure with air gaps and needing a plastic body the size of a matchbox. Below 45W the saving is nice; at 65W it is structural.

The port count is the underrated line. Because GaN frees internal volume, 65W units almost universally ship with two USB-C ports and often a USB-A, which turns one wall socket into a whole desk. Background in GaN chargers explained.
What 65W actually runs
- MacBook Air M-series — 30W minimum, fast-charges at 35W and above, so 65W is comfortable
- Dell XPS 13, ThinkPad, HP Spectre and most ultrabooks — 45–65W stock adapters
- MacBook Pro 14″ — needs 67–96W for full speed; 65W charges it but slowly under load
- Steam Deck — 45W
- Nintendo Switch — 39W, 15V/2.6A
- iPad Pro — around 30W, leaving 35W for a second device
- Galaxy S25 Ultra — 45W over PPS, if the unit advertises the right profile

FAQ
Is 65W enough for a MacBook Pro 14-inch?
It will charge it and keep it running under light load, but Apple specifies 67W or 96W for full speed. Under sustained CPU load a 65W adapter can lose ground.
Can one 65W charger run a laptop and a phone at once?
Yes, and this is the tier where that becomes practical: most units split 45W to the laptop and around 20W to the phone.
Why is my 65W charger only delivering 60W?
Almost always the cable. Above 60W the standard requires an e-marked 5A cable; without one the charger caps itself silently.
Are 65W GaN chargers hot to the touch?
Warm under sustained full load is normal and expected. A certified unit thermally throttles rather than failing if it gets too hot.
