GaN vs GaN Prime: what the generation badge actually buys you.
Gallium nitride is a semiconductor. GaNPrime, GaN II, GaN III and GaN X are brand names layered on top of it, defined by no standards body. Two things behind the badge are real — thermal design and multi-port power reallocation — and the rest is packaging.

What genuinely changes
Two mechanisms are worth paying for, and both only matter on multi-port units. The first is dynamic power allocation: instead of a fixed table that hands port one 65W and port two 30W whatever is attached, the charger detects what each device is asking for and re-splits the budget, so a phone that finishes charging returns its share to the laptop. The second is active thermal management — temperature sensing that lets the unit hold a higher sustained output instead of derating conservatively, which is what allows 120W and 140W bricks to stay pocketable. What does not change
What your device receives. The output side is still USB-C Power Delivery negotiating the same 5V, 9V, 15V and 20V rails, with 28V and above only if the charger implements PD 3.1. A phone plugged into a "Prime" unit and a plain GaN unit of the same wattage charges at exactly the same rate. Safety is unchanged too: isolation and fault protection come from the design and its UL or ETL listing, not from a marketing generation. And the generation numbers are not comparable across brands — one company's "GaN III" and another's "Prime" describe different internal changes with no shared definition. Verdict
Buy on total watts and the published per-port table, not the generation badge. For anyone buying a one- or two-port charger up to about 65W, a plain certified GaN unit is the correct purchase, and the premium for a newer-sounding name buys nothing your phone can detect. The exception is real and worth the money: on a three- or four-port charger of 100W or more, dynamic reallocation and active thermal management change what the unit actually delivers hour to hour, so a Prime-class model earns its premium when several devices share one budget. Is GaN Prime a real standard?
No. It is Anker's product branding for a set of design changes — more integrated GaN switching, temperature monitoring and dynamic power allocation. Other brands use their own names such as GaN II or GaN X. No independent body defines them.
Will a GaN Prime charger charge my phone faster?
No. The output is standard USB-C Power Delivery, so a phone draws the same profile from either. The differences only appear when several devices share one charger's power budget.
Are newer GaN generations safer?
Safety comes from certification and internal isolation, not from a generation number. A UL or ETL listed plain-GaN charger is safer than an uncertified unit advertising the newest-sounding technology.
