Neither number tells you what a device receives. A charger has one power budget and a published table describing how it splits as ports fill — and on a 4-port unit the first port almost always drops the moment a second cable goes in.

The number that matters is the combination table
Manufacturers print a per-combination table on the box: port C1 alone, C1 plus C2, all ports, and so on. That table, not the headline wattage, tells you whether your laptop still gets what it needs when a phone joins. A 100W four-port unit that drops its first port to 65W suits a 14″ MacBook Pro — until a tablet lands and it falls to 45W, at which point a working laptop can drain while charging. Where each shape wins
Two ports win in a bag: folding prongs, a body that clears the adjacent outlet, and enough budget to run an ultrabook while a phone charges. Four ports win on a desk, where the charger replaces a nest of bricks — laptop, phone, earbuds and tablet from one socket, with a detachable cord so the unit sits on the desk rather than hanging off the wall. Verdict
Buy the 4-port if the charger lives on a desk, the 2-port if it lives in a bag. For most people the honest answer is a 4-port unit of at least 100W at home — it genuinely replaces three chargers at the lowest cost per watt in the category — and nothing else, because the laptop's own brick travels with the laptop. The exception: if one charger must do both jobs, buy a 65W three-port GaN cube with folding prongs; it splits sensibly for a laptop plus a phone and still fits a coat pocket.
