Single-port vs multi-port: whose watts are they?
A single-port adapter gives one device its full rating, every time. A multi-port adapter gives you fewer outlets and one brick to carry — but the number on the box is a shared budget, and plugging in a second cable renegotiates the first.

The arithmetic that matters: add the simultaneous draw of everything you will plug in, then add about 20% headroom. A MacBook Air at 35W, an iPhone at 20W and AirPods at 5W is 60W, so a 65W three-port unit fits and a 45W one does not, whatever the port count says.
Where each one wins
Single-port wins on predictability. Nobody can halve your laptop's supply by plugging a phone in. For a bag brick that has one job — keep the laptop alive in a meeting — the dedicated unit is the right tool, and it is the smallest option per watt.
Multi-port wins on outlets, luggage and cost per watt. One 65W three-port GaN unit is cheaper than three separate bricks, occupies one hotel outlet instead of three, and weighs less than the sum of what it replaces. Verdict: multi-port at 65W and up, single-port as the dedicated spare
For most people the right answer is one 65W or 100W multi-port GaN unit as the primary charger — it wins on cost per watt, on outlets used, and on what you carry — plus one small single-port brick that lives permanently in a bag or beside a bed. Judged on delivered watts, a multi-port unit only loses when its total budget is undersized for what you attach, which is a buying error rather than a property of the format. The exception where single-port is genuinely correct: a laptop that needs its full rating under load, especially a MacBook Pro on a 96W or 140W adapter, where sharing the budget means throttled charging exactly when you least want it. FAQ
Does a multi-port charger slow everything down?
Only when the combined draw exceeds the total budget. A 100W four-port unit runs a laptop at 65W and three accessories comfortably; a 45W three-port unit cannot run a laptop and a phone at once.
Can a multi-port adapter charge two laptops?
Only if the total covers both worst-case draws. A 140W unit can run a MacBook Air on one port and an ultrabook on another; a 100W unit will throttle one of them.
Is one big multi-port charger cheaper than several small ones?
Usually yes, and it is always lighter and uses one outlet. Standardising on a single 65W or 100W unit is the most common upgrade people wish they had made sooner.
