Both sit on the 20V rail; 100W simply pushes 5A where 65W pushes 3.25A. That has two consequences — it covers a MacBook Pro 14″, and it demands an e-marked 5A cable before it will do so.

Where each one wins
65W wins for travel and for single-laptop users. The folding plug and the smaller body matter every day; the extra 35W matters only when a second or third device is attached. A MacBook Air, an XPS 13 or a ThinkPad X-series will never ask for more than 65W.
100W wins on desks and on Pro laptops. A MacBook Pro 14″ ships with 67W or 96W depending on configuration, so 100W is the third-party equivalent with a margin. It is also the point where four-port units become common, meaning a laptop at 65W and three accessories sharing the remaining 35W without the laptop dropping a rail. Verdict: 65W for one laptop, 100W for a desk
If you carry one ultrabook and a phone, buy 65W: it delivers every watt those devices request, it folds flat, and it is the better watts-per-dollar tier. If a MacBook Pro 14″, a docked gaming handheld, or three simultaneous devices are in the picture, buy 100W — the shared budget is the real feature, not the headline number. FAQ
Will a 100W charger charge my MacBook Air faster than a 65W one?
Only up to the machine's own limit. M-series MacBook Airs fast-charge at 70W on the models that support it, so anything at or above 70W is the same speed. Below that, 65W is normal-speed charging.
Do I need a special cable for 100W?
Yes. Sustained output above 60W requires a 5A e-marked cable. Without one the link negotiates down to 60W regardless of what the adapter can supply.
Is a 100W adapter overkill for a phone?
Not harmful, just unnecessary in isolation — the phone still draws about 20 to 27W. On a multi-port 100W unit, though, the extra budget is what keeps the phone at full speed while a laptop is attached.
