Desktop adapters: the format that holds full output.

A detachable AC cord, a body with room for a heatsink, and four to eight ports. Desktop-format supplies exist because past roughly 100W a plug-in brick runs out of surface area — and because a fixed workstation would rather hide the power supply than hang it off the wall.

The three things a cord changes

Thermals. A desktop unit has volume. More internal space means a larger transformer, bigger output capacitors and often a metal chassis acting as a heatsink, so the unit holds its rated output for hours rather than for a burst. That is the real distinction between formats: not peak watts, but sustained watts.

Placement. The supply goes behind the monitor or under the desk while a standard IEC cord runs to the outlet. Most units use the two-pin figure-eight C7 inlet or the three-pin C13 found on desktop PCs, both of which are cheap to replace in a longer or shorter length. Nothing hangs off the wall, nothing blocks the second socket, and the whole thing stops being a mechanical stress on the receptacle.

Port budget. With room inside for more output stages, four to eight ports become practical, and total wattage climbs to a level where the ports do not have to fight — the arithmetic is on the 4-port page and the 6-port page.

Match the total to your 100W, 140W or 240W requirement, then check the cable spec — above 100W the cable, not the adapter, is usually what silently caps you.

Buy the AC cord you actually want. Desktop units ship with a generic 1.2–1.5m lead, and the C7 or C13 inlet is a standard you can swap for free-standing lengths of 0.3m for a tidy desk or 3m for a floor outlet. Changing the cord costs a few dollars and does not affect the adapter's rating, whereas coiling a too-long lead behind a hot supply does it no favours.

FAQ

Is a desktop charger better than a wall charger at the same wattage?

For sustained load, yes. Both hit the rated number, but the corded unit has the mass and surface area to hold it for hours without thermal rollback. For portability the wall unit wins outright — it is a placement decision, not a quality one.

Do desktop chargers have fans?

Almost none at 240W and below; GaN switching is efficient enough that passive cooling handles it. Anything that does hum is either a fan or coil whine, and coil whine under load is common and harmless even though it sounds alarming.

Can I leave a desktop adapter plugged in permanently?

Yes. Idle draw on a certified modern unit is a fraction of a watt, and there is no charge cycle to manage because the device controls its own battery. Give it 5cm of clearance so convection can work.

What is the difference between a C7 and a C13 inlet?

C7 is the two-pin figure-eight connector used by most compact desktop supplies; C13 is the three-pin kettle-style inlet from desktop PCs and includes an earth pin. They are not interchangeable, so check the socket shape before ordering a replacement lead.
