3-port adapters: one brick replaces the whole travel kit.

Laptop, phone, earbuds. That is the three-device pattern almost every travelling professional has, and it is why 65W and 100W 3-port units outsell everything else in the category — one brick, one outlet, nothing left charging in a hotel room.

How three ports divide the budget

Adding a third output makes the split table longer rather than deeper: the laptop port keeps its allocation until two accessories are attached, at which point it steps down once. Typical published behaviour for the two dominant ratings:

Notice that C1 holds 45W on a 65W unit across every combination once a second device appears: it steps down once, then stays put. That makes 65W the sensible floor for a laptop kit — a MacBook Air keeps a usable rate whatever else you attach, where a 45W 3-port leaves the laptop on 25W or less with the kit assembled.

Why three rather than two or four

It is still bag-sized. Three ports is the highest count that reliably stays in a folding-prong wall format. Four usually means a corded desktop body, which is a different piece of luggage.

It matches the real device count. Count what charges in a hotel room overnight: laptop, phone, and one of watch, earbuds or handheld. Two ports leaves one out; four adds a port you rarely fill.

The mixed port layout is a feature here. Two USB-C plus one USB-A is the usual arrangement, and on a travel unit the A port earns its place charging a camera, a headlamp or a controller from a cable already in the bag. On a desk it is far less defensible — see the USB-A page.

Carry one 5A e-marked cable, not three generic ones. A 65W or 100W 3-port unit will happily negotiate its top rail, then get silently capped at 60W by a cheap cable with no e-marker chip. The charger reports nothing and the laptop just charges slowly. Label the good cable and keep it with the brick — the details are in the cable guide.

Is a 65W 3-port enough for a MacBook Pro?

For a 14″ model it works but does not fast-charge, and with two accessories attached the laptop sits around 45W — fine overnight, slow if you are working. A 100W 3-port keeps 65W on the laptop port with the kit assembled.

Why does my laptop charge slower when I plug in my phone?

The adapter re-runs its split table. On a typical 65W 3-port the laptop port steps from 65W to 45W the moment a second device appears, then stays at 45W whether one or two accessories are attached.

Should the third port be USB-A or USB-C?

USB-A if your third device is a camera, controller or headlamp with a legacy cable, since those draw only a few watts anyway. USB-C if it is a modern phone, tablet or handheld that can use Power Delivery.

Can a 3-port charger run two laptops?

Not well below 100W. Two machines drawing 45W and 65W need 110W of budget before accessories, so a 65W unit will starve one of them. Two laptops is a 140W or 240W problem, usually in a desktop format.
