Apple 96W USB-C: full speed for the 14-inch Pro.
The 96W (model A2166) tops out at 20.5V and 4.7A. That odd voltage is what separates it from every 100W third-party brick, and in practice it changes nothing.

4.7A on the top rail means this brick needs a USB-C cable rated for more than 3A — Apple's own 2 m USB-C charge cable and any e-marked 5A cable qualify. It is still PD 3.0, not PD 3.1: there is no 28V rail here, which is the single line that separates it from the 140W adapter.
The machines that need it
- MacBook Pro 14″ with Pro or Max chips — this is the adapter that unlocks Apple's fast-charge behaviour on that machine, and the one that keeps the battery filling under a sustained export rather than merely holding level.
- Intel-era 15″ and 16″ MacBook Pro (2019 onward) — 96W was the shipped adapter, replacing the older 87W brick.
- MacBook Air, iPad Pro, iPhone — over-served and perfectly safe. An Air draws its 70W ceiling, an iPad its 30W, an iPhone its 27W.
- MacBook Pro 16″ (M-series) — under-served for fast charge. It runs and charges from 96W, but 140W is what Apple specifies.

Verdict
96W is the correct wattage for a 14″ MacBook Pro, and Apple's version is a perfectly good adapter that happens to be single-port and large. A certified 100W GaN charger delivers 4W more, adds two or three ports, and is roughly half the volume. Buy Apple's if you want the exact in-box part; buy 100W GaN in every other case. Do I need a special cable for the Apple 96W adapter?
You need a USB-C cable rated above 3A, because the top rail is 20.5V at 4.7A. Apple's 2 m USB-C charge cable and any e-marked 5A cable work. A thin phone cable will limit the adapter to a lower rail.
Can the 96W adapter charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro?
Yes, it powers and charges it safely, but it will not trigger fast charging on the M-series 16-inch, which Apple specifies at 140W. For daily use on a 16-inch, 140W is the right adapter.
Is a third-party 100W charger better than Apple's 96W?
For most buyers, yes: 4W more output, multiple ports, and a much smaller GaN body at a lower price. The only thing Apple's brick has over it is being the identical part that shipped with the machine.
