AC power adapters: what the shop name really means.
Search "AC adapter" and you get USB-C bricks, barrel-plug supplies and laptop cords in one undifferentiated pile. The word describes the input side only: it plugs into alternating-current mains. What comes out the other end is almost always DC.
The name describes the input, not the output
Wall power in the United States is 120V alternating current at 60Hz; most of the world runs 220–240V at 50Hz. No semiconductor can use that directly. The brick's job is conversion, and the industry named it after the socket it hangs from — which is why a listing reads "AC Adapter" on the box and "Output: 5V⎓3A" on the label without contradiction.

The rare case for a true AC-output unit
A small set of hardware genuinely wants alternating current at the far end: doorbell chimes fed from a 16V or 24V transformer, low-voltage landscape lighting, a handful of guitar pedals specified in volts AC, and older cordless phone bases. These are transformers rather than chargers — no rectifier, no regulation, and the rating is often given in VA rather than watts. No USB-C adapter can substitute for one.

Sizing is separate from type: take the wattage from the device — 20W for phones, 65W for ultrabooks — and check certification marks first, using the safety guide. For a desk rather than a bag, a desktop-format supply beats a plug-in wall unit on sustained load.
FAQ
Is an AC adapter the same as a charger?
In everyday speech yes, but strictly a charger includes the charge-control circuitry. Modern phones and laptops keep that circuitry inside the device, so the external unit is only a power supply — which is why an oversized adapter cannot overcharge anything.
Why does my adapter say AC on one side and DC on the other?
Because it converts between them. The input line describes what it takes from the wall, the output line describes what it hands the device. Both are printed because both have to match: mains voltage on one end, device rail on the other.
Do I need a voltage converter for my AC adapter abroad?
Almost certainly not. If the input line reads 100–240V, the adapter handles any mains standard on earth and you only need the correct plug shape. Converters are for heating elements and motors, never for switching power supplies.
