MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro chargers: can one brick serve both?
Yes. A MacBook Air on a 140W adapter draws exactly what a MacBook Air draws — power is requested by the laptop, not pushed by the charger. The real question is which wattage to standardise on, and that depends on the largest machine in the house.

Why oversizing is a non-event
Every USB-C laptop advertises the profiles it can accept and the adapter advertises the profiles it can supply; they agree on the highest one both support. A 13″ Air on a 140W brick negotiates the same profile it would get from Apple's 70W and stops there. The consequences run the other way: undersize a machine and it charges slowly, and under a heavy workload it can consume the whole supply while the battery quietly drops.
Where each brick is the right buy
An Air-only household should buy for size, not watts: the Air's fast-charge specification is 70W, and anything beyond that is bag weight. A mixed Air-and-14″-Pro household should standardise on 96W to 100W, which fast-charges the Pro and is transparent to the Air. A household with a 16″ Pro needs one 140W PD 3.1 adapter and an EPR cable — the only path to its fast-charge state, and it covers every other Mac too. Verdict
Buy one 96W-to-100W adapter and stop thinking about it — that is the right answer for the overwhelming majority of Mac households, because it fast-charges every MacBook except the 16″ Pro, is transparent to an Air, and covers iPads and phones on the way. If a 16″ Pro is in the mix, buy 140W instead and treat it as the house standard; it is the only spec that leaves nothing on the table. Can I charge a MacBook Air with a MacBook Pro charger?
Yes, with any of them, including the 140W. The Air requests its own power profile and the adapter supplies exactly that. Charge time is the same as on the Air's specified adapter.
Can I charge a MacBook Pro with the Air's 30W charger?
It will charge, slowly, and mostly while the machine is idle or asleep. Under a heavy workload a 14-inch or 16-inch Pro can draw more than 30W, so the battery may fall even while plugged in.
Does using a bigger adapter hurt battery health?
No. Battery wear is driven by heat, charge cycles and time spent at very high or very low states of charge — not by the rating of the adapter, which the laptop never fully requests anyway.
