MacBook Pro 16″: 140W over PD 3.1, or a compromise.

This is the one consumer laptop where the protocol version genuinely matters. Full-speed charging needs 140W delivered on PD 3.1's 28V rail — a spec that did not exist before 2021 and that most 100W chargers still cannot produce, however large they are.

The requirement, precisely

Max input: 140W.
Protocol: USB-C PD 3.1 / EPR, using the 28V rail. Standard PD 3.0 stops at 20V/5A = 100W, which is why a 100W brick can never fast-charge this machine no matter how it is marketed.
Cable: an EPR cable rated to 240W, or Apple's USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. Regular 5A e-marked cables carry 100W and no more.
If you use less: the laptop runs and charges on any 60W+ PD source. It charges slowly, and under a heavy sustained load on a 60–65W adapter the battery percentage can fall while plugged in. Nothing is damaged — you are simply trading time.

Verify the 28V line item. A compliant 140W listing prints its rails: 5V/9V/15V/20V/28V. If a 140W charger's profile table stops at 20V, it is a 100W-class device with a multi-port total of 140W — a completely different product.

Don't waste money on

A 140W-total multi-port that splits into 65W + 65W. Total wattage is not per-port wattage. The number that matters is the primary port's maximum with a second device attached.

Non-EPR cables at 140W. A 100W 5A cable caps the contract below the adapter's ability. The rating is printed in the listing, occasionally on the connector — details in the cable guide.

FAQ

Can a 100W charger charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro?

Yes, at a slower rate, and it will hold the machine steady under most workloads. What it cannot do is fast charge, because that needs the 28V rail introduced with PD 3.1.

Do I need Apple's MagSafe 3 cable?

No, but you do need an equivalent: a USB-C cable rated for 240W EPR. Ordinary 100W 5A cables limit a 140W adapter to 100W.

Is 140W dangerous for other devices on the same charger?

No. Each port negotiates independently and a phone still requests its usual 20–27W. The only thing to watch is how the total budget is split between ports.

Will a 240W charger charge it faster than 140W?

No. 140W is the laptop's ceiling. A 240W unit buys headroom for other devices sharing the same brick, not speed for this one.
