45W is the first wattage that covers gaming handhelds, ultraportable laptops and Samsung's fastest phone charging in one brick — but only if it carries the right PPS range. Watts alone do not unlock Super Fast Charging 2.0.

The profile set that matters

Drop the PPS line and the adapter is still a fine 45W laptop supply — but a Galaxy S Ultra plugged into it falls back to a fixed rail and charges at roughly 25W. That single missing profile is the most common reason someone buys "a 45W Samsung charger" and sees no change. Mechanism: PPS explained.

Devices that land exactly here

Steam Deck ships with a 45W USB-C supply and draws close to it while charging under load. Nintendo Switch asks for 15V/2.6A — 39W — so a 45W adapter with a real 15V rail covers dock duty with margin. Galaxy S Ultra and Tab S Ultra reach their 45W maximum only over PPS. Dell, Lenovo and HP ultraportables in the 13-inch class are frequently specified at 45W over USB-C, and a MacBook Air charges comfortably. Above 45W, start checking the cable; at 45W you are still safe. 20V/2.25A is 2.25A — comfortably inside the 3A that every unmarked USB-C cable handles. It is the jump to 60W and beyond that requires an e-marked 5A cable, so a 45W setup rarely needs a cable upgrade unless the existing one is damaged.

When 45W is overkill, and when to size up

It is overkill for a phone-only life: an iPhone caps in the low-to-mid 20s and a base Galaxy at 25W, so 30W or 35W saves money and bulk. It is also more than a Xiaomi-family 33W phone can use, since that tier relies on a vendor rail rather than watts. Why is my Galaxy S Ultra not charging at 45W?

Almost always a missing PPS profile. Super Fast Charging 2.0 needs a programmable range near 11V at about 4A; a 45W adapter with fixed rails only will run the phone at roughly 25W.

Is 45W enough for a laptop?

For a 13-inch ultraportable or a MacBook Air, yes. Pro-class 14-inch and 16-inch laptops start at 67W and 140W respectively and will charge slowly or only while asleep on 45W.

Does a 45W adapter work with a Nintendo Switch dock?

Yes, provided it offers a 15V rail. The dock requests 15V at 2.6A, which is 39W, so a 45W adapter with the standard 15V/3A profile covers it with headroom.
