Divide before you buy. A 100W 6-port station averages under 17W per port with everything connected — perfect for five phones and a tablet, hopeless for two laptops. Six ports is a device-count solution, and the per-port wattage is what you trade for it.

The arithmetic nobody prints on the box

At two, three and four ports the split table still leaves one strong port. At six, the budget is thin enough that the average matters more than the peak. Run the division before anything else.

The trap is a 100W six-port unit sold beside a 100W four-port one at a similar price. Same budget, two more mouths. If the sixth port exists so that nobody in the house has to wait, that is a fine reason to buy it — but at 100W total, expect a phone on port six to charge at tablet-accessory speed, not at 20W.

Who a station actually suits

Households. Four phones, two tablets, a watch and earbuds is a normal family inventory, and simultaneous draw is far lower than the device count suggests. A 150W station in a hallway ends the nightly hunt for a free outlet.

Shared desks and small offices. Hot-desking means unknown devices in unknown combinations, so buy for the worst case rather than the average: two laptops at once means 200W or more. Office charging picks covers the shortlist.

Classroom and workshop carts. Many identical low-draw devices is the ideal case for this format — the split table barely matters when every device wants the same 12W.

Six ports almost always arrives in a corded desktop body, because that is the only format with the volume to dissipate 150W or more continuously. Expect a 4C-plus-2A or 5C-plus-1A layout; the legacy ports are covered on the USB-A page.

Give a station 5cm of clear air on every side. Six ports at load is the highest sustained heat output of any adapter category, and these units are routinely shoved into a cabinet, behind a monitor stand or under a sofa. Thermal rollback is the designed response, so a station tucked into a closed drawer quietly reduces everyone's charging speed and nothing on the box explains why.

FAQ

Can a 6-port charger run two laptops at once?

Only above roughly 150W total, and comfortably only at 200W or more. Two machines wanting 65W and 45W consume 110W before a single phone is attached, so a 100W station will throttle at least one of them.

Is a 6-port charger safe to leave running overnight?

Yes, with ventilation. Certified units regulate each port independently and roll back on temperature, but they need airflow to do it. The risk is not fire so much as a station in a closed cabinet quietly charging everything at half speed.

Why do the last two ports charge so slowly?

Because the budget is already committed. Split tables allocate in priority order, so once the high-watt ports are occupied the remaining ones get what is left — often 7.5W or 12W on a 100W unit with everything connected.

Should I buy USB-A ports on a 6-port station?

One or two is reasonable on a shared unit, because guests and children arrive with legacy cables. Beyond that they waste budget: a USB-A port caps around 12 to 18W and cannot negotiate Power Delivery at all.
