240W is the ceiling of the entire USB-C standard.

The honest summary for 2026: single-port 240W consumption is rare. Gaming laptops that could use it mostly retain a barrel-plug DC input for full performance and accept 100–140W over USB-C for charging and light work. The cable is not optional at this level

An EPR contract above 100W is only permitted over a cable e-marked for 240W — 50V, 5A. That marking is different from the 100W/5A e-marker most people already own, and a 240W charger paired with a 100W cable simply stays on the 20V rail and behaves like a 100W unit. Cable length is a real constraint at 48V/5A. Long EPR cables exist, but the thicker conductors make them stiff and heavy; if you want a tidy desk, put the charger near the laptop and run the AC lead instead of a three-metre USB-C cable.

When 240W is the wrong answer

One laptop, however big: buy 140W — the 16″ MacBook Pro cannot use more, and the price and size gap is significant. A busy desk with one laptop: 160W or 200W covers it. Travel: 240W bricks are heavy and their real advantage disappears when only two devices are attached; 100W travels better.
