Meta Quest 3: 18W in, and that is the ceiling.
The Quest 3 accepts 18W over USB-C PD and ships with an 18W adapter. Nothing larger charges it faster. The interesting question is not which charger to buy — it is why the headset still drains while it is plugged in.
The spec
Maximum input: 18W USB-C PD. Protocol: standard PD — no PPS, no proprietary handshake. Cable: any USB-C to USB-C rated 3A. From empty, the in-box supply takes the headset to full in a little over two hours. A 20W, 30W or 65W charger produces exactly the same result, because the headset requests 18W and stops there.
Two accessories change the arithmetic without changing the ceiling. The Elite Strap with Battery adds a second cell that charges through the headset, so time-to-full roughly doubles while runtime roughly doubles as well. The charging dock powers headset and controllers together and uses its own supply — do not swap in a smaller one.
Why it drains while plugged in
A Quest 3 in a demanding standalone title consumes a large share of 18W on its own. Give it less than that and the battery falls even though the cable is connected. Two situations produce this regularly:
PC Link sessions. A computer's USB port typically supplies far less than a wall adapter, so long PCVR sessions drain the headset despite the Link cable. The fix is a powered hub or a dedicated wall charger on the headset, not a longer cable.
Old 5W cubes. A legacy USB-A charger cannot negotiate PD, caps at 5V, and loses ground in any active session.

Don't waste money on
Anything above 30W bought for the headset alone. 18W is the contract. Extra watts are only worth paying for if other devices share the brick — see multi-port chargers.
"Fast charge" VR adapters. There is no faster profile to unlock; the headset's own limit is the constraint.
