Charging slowly? Work the list in order.

Slow charging almost never means a broken battery. Run these five checks in order — cable first, because it is the cause more often than everything below it combined — and change one variable at a time.

1. The cable — by far the most common cause

USB-C cables are not interchangeable. A USB-A-to-C cable cannot carry Power Delivery at all and tops out around 7.5–12W regardless of the brick. A C-to-C cable without an e-marker chip is limited to 3A, which caps you at 60W. Cheap bundled cables use thin conductors; over 2m the voltage drop alone costs real watts. The most common failure is a damaged CC line, which silently drops the negotiation to default 5V/0.5A — 2.5W.

The test is a swap, not an inspection: cables fail internally at the strain relief. Borrow one you know delivers full speed; if the problem disappears, you are done. Above 60W you also need the right cable class — see the USB-C cable guide and what an e-marker does.

2. Port debris

Pocket lint compacts into a felt disc at the bottom of a USB-C port and stops the plug seating fully; partial contact means the negotiation falls back to 5V. Shine a torch in and compare with another device's port — if the plug does not click home, that is your fault. Power the device off and lift the lint out with a wooden or plastic toothpick, never a metal pin, and no canned air.

3. The adapter's profile ladder

Wattage on the box is a ceiling, not a promise: a device can only take a voltage step the adapter actually advertises. A 45W charger with no PPS gives a Galaxy S25 Ultra 15W, not 45W — the most common "my new fast charger is slow" complaint (PPS explained). A 100W brick without a 28V rail will not fast-charge a 16″ MacBook Pro. And a multi-port unit splits: many "65W" duals deliver 65W on port one alone but 45W + 18W once a second device joins. Buy the one tool that ends the argument. An inline USB-C power meter sits between charger and cable and shows the negotiated voltage and current live. 9V × 2.2A means PD is working; 5.1V × 0.9A means it is not.

4. The device's own limits

Phones deliberately slow down. iOS Optimized Battery Charging parks at 80% until it predicts you need the rest; iPhone 15 and later can be hard-capped at 80% in settings; Pixel's Adaptive Charging finishes near your alarm; Samsung's Protect Battery caps at 85%. None are faults. Every lithium battery also charges in constant-current then constant-voltage phases, so the last 20% is slow by physics. Heat is the other limiter: a warm phone throttles hard, as why chargers get hot covers.

5. The outlet or extension

Worn outlet contacts, a long thin extension lead or a heavily loaded strip all cost voltage at the plug. So do USB ports on monitors, keyboards and airline seats, often 5V/0.5–2.1A only. Test with the same charger and cable in a known-good wall socket. If the charger is warm at the prongs rather than the body, replace the outlet, not the charger. Still stuck? Why does my phone charge slower than it used to?

Usually a cable degraded internally at the strain relief, or lint compacted in the port. Swap the cable first.

Does a higher-wattage charger fix slow charging?

Only if the adapter was undersized or lacked the right profile. If a 20W brick already meets the phone's maximum input, a 100W brick charges it at exactly the same speed.

Why does charging slow down after 80%?

Two reasons stack: lithium cells switch to constant-voltage near the top, and iOS, Pixel and Samsung all hold at 80–85% until they predict you need a full battery.

Can a cheap cable really cost me watts?

Yes. A non-e-marked C-to-C cable caps at 3A (60W), and a damaged CC wire drops the link to 5V/0.5A.
