Head-to-head · Should you upgrade?

Samsung 45W vs 25W: is upgrading the brick you already own worth it?

You have Samsung's 25W adapter in a drawer. The question is not which is better on paper — it is whether swapping it changes anything on your Galaxy, and for most handsets the answer is no.

Does your handset actually accept 45W?

This is the entire decision. Only the Ultra and Plus tiers of the S-series, plus the Tab S tablets, negotiate the 45W path; a base Galaxy S, an A-series phone, and the foldables all cap at 25W and will draw exactly 25W from a 45W adapter. Plugging a 45W brick into a 25W phone does no harm — the handset requests its own profile — but nothing changes, and you have swapped a small brick for a larger one. Confirm your model's ceiling on the Samsung 45W page or the Super Fast Charging explainer first.

What the upgrade actually buys on an Ultra

Less than the 80% wattage jump suggests, because the extra power only applies to the bulk-charge phase. Lithium-ion charging tapers hard past roughly 60–70% state of charge, and the last stretch is thermally governed regardless of what the wall offers. The gain is a shorter dash from empty to two-thirds full — the twenty-minutes-before-leaving scenario. The requirement people miss: 45W needs a 5A e-marked cable, and the 3A cable from your 25W brick holds the phone at the lower tier whatever adapter is behind it. See the e-marker cable guide.

Keep the 25W rather than retiring it. Its smaller body makes it the better nightstand and suitcase adapter, and overnight charging at 25W is gentler on the cell than 45W. The upgrade is a second charger for the desk, not a replacement.

Verdict

Do not upgrade unless you own an S Ultra, an S Plus or a Tab S. On every other Galaxy the 25W adapter already delivers the phone's maximum negotiated rate, and the 45W changes nothing but the size of the thing in your outlet. If you do own one of the three device families above, upgrade — 45W-class PPS adapters are inexpensive relative to the phone, and the shortened bulk-charge phase is real. The exception that flips the answer: if you also carry a Nintendo Switch, a Steam Deck or a small USB-C laptop, buy the 45W regardless of handset, because 25W adapters cannot supply the 15V/2.6A a docked Switch wants or the 45W a Steam Deck asks for. Buying from scratch rather than upgrading? The new-purchase version of this decision works through it from the other direction.

FAQ

Will a 45W adapter damage a 25W Galaxy phone?

No. The phone negotiates its own profile over USB-C Power Delivery and requests only 25W. The extra capability sits unused; there is no thermal or battery penalty.

Why did my 45W adapter not speed anything up?

Two usual causes: the handset caps at 25W, or the cable is a standard 3A type. The 45W tier needs a 5A e-marked cable, which is why Samsung includes one in the box.

Should I keep using my old 25W charger overnight?

Yes, and it is arguably the better choice. Overnight charging has hours to spare, so the lower rate produces less heat, and heat is the main controllable factor in long-term battery wear.
