Where the 35W Dual wins
Anywhere two things need power from one outlet. Hotel rooms have two sockets and a lamp in one of them; nightstands have an iPhone and an Apple Watch puck; a bag needs to cover a phone and AirPods. The split is the point: roughly 17.5W per port is well above what a Watch or an AirPods case can absorb, and 17.5W into an iPhone is only marginally slower than 20W. Where the 40W Dynamic wins
One device, maximum speed. Apple built this adapter alongside the iPhone 17 generation and it uses Adjustable Voltage Supply — the PD 3.1 mechanism that lets the device request voltage in fine steps rather than picking from fixed rails — to sustain 40W and surge to 60W during the bulk-charge phase. Buy the 35W Dual for most people. Two ports beat 5W of extra headroom in almost every real situation, because the constraint in daily life is outlets, not seconds. It is the better nightstand adapter, the better travel adapter, and it covers an iPhone plus a Watch without a second brick. The exception is specific and worth taking: if you own an iPhone 17-generation phone and routinely need a twenty-minute top-up before leaving the house, the 40W Dynamic is the only Apple adapter that actually delivers the higher rate, and no amount of port-splitting substitutes for it.
