Apple 35W Dual USB-C: 35W total, not each.

Apple sells this adapter in two housings and one electrical spec. The number that matters is not 35 — it is what happens to 35 when you plug in a second device.

Two housings, one power budget

Apple offers 35W dual-port charging as the 35W Dual USB-C Port Compact Power Adapter — a small squared-off block — and as the 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter, a flatter slab designed to sit closer to the wall and stack better on a power strip. They differ in shape and footprint only. Output, port count and behaviour are identical, so choose on where it has to physically fit: the compact block in a bag, the flat one behind furniture or in a crowded outlet strip.

Apple documents the 35W as a combined maximum. Plugging a second device in does not add capacity; it divides it, and the adapter renegotiates both ports the moment the second cable goes in. That single line is what buyers get wrong, and it is why this adapter is excellent for an iPhone plus an Apple Watch puck (5W) and mediocre for two phones in a hurry.

35W split two ways is under 20W per device. If you want two genuinely fast charges at once, the spec to shop for is 65W-class with two USB-C ports — not a 35W dual. Splitting is fine when one of the two devices is small.

Who it is right for

  • Nightstand duty: iPhone plus Apple Watch, or iPhone plus AirPods. The small device takes 5W, leaving roughly 30W for the phone.
  • One-brick travel: MacBook Air alone at 35W overnight, iPhone alone at full speed during the day, both together at reduced speed.
  • Not right for: fast-charging a MacBook Air, which needs 67W or more; an iPhone 17 at its full rate, which wants the 40W Dynamic adapter; or any setup with a USB-A cable, since there is no USB-A port here.

Verdict

Worth it if the second device is small and the first device is an iPhone — that is a genuinely tidy nightstand or hotel-room brick. Skip it if you were reading "35W dual" as "35W per port": a 65W two-port GaN charger costs marginally more and removes the compromise entirely.
