How we ranked these
Five criteria, the same on every list here and on the master roundup: delivered wattage under sustained load, not the shell number; protocol correctness — PD's 5V, 9V, 15V and 20V rails, PPS where claimed, PD 3.1 above 28V; safety certification, where a missing UL or ETL listing disqualifies; watts per dollar and per cubic inch; and track record — recalls, continuous-full-load behaviour. Sources are published specs and certification records, not star ratings or invented prices.
The primary sort is the wattage tier the machine genuinely needs — 45W for fanless ultraportables and Chromebooks, 65W for mainstream ultrabooks, 100W for 14-inch workstations, 140W for 16-inch machines. Buying a tier low is the commonest charging mistake. Cable spec is ranked alongside the adapter: 61–100W needs a 5A e-marked cable, above 100W a PD 3.1 cable rated to 240W. An adapter shipped without one is scored at the lower tier.

FAQ
Can any USB-C charger power a laptop?
Only if it supplies the wattage the laptop negotiates and the laptop's USB-C port supports charging. A 20W phone charger trickles at best, and many machines refuse to charge below a minimum.
What happens if my laptop charger is underpowered?
The laptop charges slowly when idle and can lose charge while plugged in during heavy work, because the processor draws more than the adapter supplies. No damage occurs — the deficit simply comes out of the battery.
Do I need a 5A cable for a 65W laptop charger?
Yes, above 60W. Power Delivery caps a standard cable at 3A, so 20V × 3A = 60W is the limit without an e-marker chip. Above 100W the cable must additionally be rated for the 240W extended power range.
Is a multi-port charger a bad idea for a laptop?
Not if the budget is sized for everything at once. The failure mode is a 65W two-port unit dropping the laptop port to 45W when a phone is added — read the published split table.
