Chargers rarely die from electrical failure. They die from a loose prong hinge, a cracked strain relief where a captive cable exits, or solder joints fatigued by years of heat cycling. Ranking durability means ranking those three failure modes, not reading warranty length.
How we ranked these
The five site-wide criteria are delivered watts, protocol correctness, safety certification, size and price per watt, and track record. On this list track record does most of the work, and it is assessed against four specific mechanical failure modes:
Prong hinge fatigue. Folding prongs are the most common wear point in a charger. The detent that holds them open loosens over hundreds of cycles; once the prongs rock in the socket, contact resistance rises and the plug runs warm. Fixed-prong and detachable-cord designs sidestep this.
Strain relief. A captive cable concentrates every bend where it leaves the housing. A moulded, tapered relief spreads that load; an abrupt exit does not, and the conductors fatigue and fracture. Detachable cables remove the problem.
Thermal design. Every 10°C of sustained operating temperature shortens the life of electrolytic capacitors, so a charger that runs cool at full load outlasts one that runs hot at the same output. That is GaN's genuine durability contribution.
Housing. Matte polycarbonate resists scuffing; glossy finishes show every mark and crack more readily at the seams. Look for ultrasonic welding or screws rather than adhesive.

Do folding prongs wear out?
Eventually, yes. If the charger rocks in the socket or the prongs run noticeably warm, the hinge has worn and the unit should be replaced.
Are chargers with detachable cords more reliable?
Generally yes: the two most common failure points are removed or made replaceable. The trade-off is bulk, which suits desks rather than bags.
Does running a charger at full power all the time shorten its life?
Sustained full load raises internal temperature, and heat ages capacitors. Buying one wattage class above your real need keeps the charger at partial load and cooler.
Is a metal housing more durable than plastic?
Not necessarily. Polycarbonate is the standard because it insulates as well as protects. Housing quality shows in the seam construction and finish, not the material category.
