South Africa: Type M is big, and your adapter probably isn't.
South Africa runs 230V at 50Hz, and its standard socket takes Type M — three large round pins, physically bigger than almost any other plug in the world. A Europe or UK adapter simply will not fit an older socket, and a newer SANS 164-2 Type N standard is being rolled out alongside it. This is the genuine trap of the trip.

Three standards, and which one you meet
Type M is the traditional South African socket: large round pins on a wide triangle, derived from an old 15A British design and used in very few other places. Type N is the newer SANS 164-2 fitting, smaller, with a pin layout that also accepts the two-pin Europlug — so where Type N has been installed, a plain Type C adapter works. What you cannot do is assume: buildings of different ages have different sockets, and a Type C adapter that fits a Type N outlet has no chance in a Type M one.

Voltage is the easy half
