Mexico: your plug fits. Your ground pin might not.
Mexico runs 127V at 60Hz on Type A and Type B sockets — the same flat blades as the US, so a US charger goes straight into the wall with nothing in between. The thing that catches travelers is the third pin: plenty of older sockets offer only two slots, and a grounded laptop cord will not seat in them.

127V is a nominal figure, not a warning. ANSI C84.1 permits US service voltage anywhere from 114V to 126V, so Mexico's nominal sits at the top of a range American equipment tolerates daily, and any charger printed 100–240V has tens of volts of margin. Compare Peru's 220V sockets that also accept flat US pins — the genuinely dangerous version of the same idea.
The missing third slot
The Mexican standard NOM-001-SEDE includes grounding and modern wiring has it. Older buildings — colonial centres, long-established family hotels, historic-district rentals — still present two-slot sockets with no earth hole and often no wide neutral slot. Two things in a US carry-on care:
- Three-prong laptop bricks — the older barrel-plug Dell, HP and Lenovo supplies with a detachable IEC cord
- Apple's long extension cord, which is three-prong; the folding duckhead that ships in the same box is two-prong and fits anywhere
The fix is to leave the grounded cable at home. Nearly every modern USB-C charger is Class II double-insulated — two blades, no earth pin, marked by the double-square symbol on the casing — so a 65W GaN charger sidesteps the problem and replaces three bricks.

What works as-is, and what would need a converter
In Mexico, everything works as-is. Dual-voltage electronics — every USB charger, laptop supply, camera battery charger and electric shaver of the last decade — are fine, and so are the single-voltage 120V things that would be destroyed in Europe, because Mexico is on the same 120V-class grid: a hair dryer, a curling iron and a travel steamer all run. Do US plugs work in Mexico?
Yes. Mexico uses Type A and Type B sockets, the same shapes as the US, at 127V and 60Hz. Two-blade plugs fit everywhere; three-prong plugs fit wherever a grounded Type B socket has been installed.
Is 127V a problem for a 120V US device?
No. US service voltage is itself allowed to run up to 126V under ANSI C84.1, and anything marked 100-240V on its label has an enormous margin. Mexico's 127V is the same grid family as the US 120V.
My laptop charger has three prongs and the socket has two slots. Now what?
Use the two-prong folding duckhead if your charger has one, or switch to a USB-C GaN charger, which is double-insulated and has no earth pin. A 3-to-2 cheater adapter works but removes the ground, so only use it on double-insulated equipment.
Do I need a voltage converter in Mexico?
No. Converters exist to step 220-240V down for single-voltage heating elements and motors. Mexico is at 127V, so even a US hair dryer runs normally.
