Apple's name carries two numbers, and only one is the rating: a 40W adapter that can briefly supply more — a real feature for one family of phones.

Treat this as a 40W adapter. The higher figure in the product name describes a peak offered under conditions Apple does not fully publish — not a second continuous rating. Anything requesting 40W or less is fully served regardless.
What it is genuinely good at
It exists because the iPhone 17 generation raised its input ceiling past what a 20W or 30W brick supplies. If you charge in short bursts, this is the Apple-branded route to the curve Apple's marketing describes — extra watts only shorten the steep part of a lithium curve. It also covers every current iPhone and iPad, a MacBook Air under light work, and a Switch in handheld mode.
Where it falls short, and who should skip it
You are paying an Apple premium for a behaviour that benefits one phone family. Without an iPhone 17-class device, a 45W or 65W GaN gives more sustained watts, folding prongs, extra ports and often PPS — and charges an older iPhone just as fast, because the phone's ceiling binds, not the adapter's.
It is single-port, and a burst will not rescue a laptop: a MacBook Pro 14″ wants 67–96W sustained — see 70W adapters. Skip it if your newest device is an iPhone 16 or older, you want more than one port, or you also charge a Galaxy — there is no reason to believe a PPS band is part of this product.
