An iPad battery holds roughly 28–40 watt-hours, two to three times an iPhone's. That is why the 20W brick in the box is adequate rather than good, and why moving to 30–35W is one of the few charger upgrades that changes how a device feels to live with.

Do the arithmetic and the difference stops being abstract. A 38Wh iPad Pro on a 20W adapter needs well over two hours of wall time even before charge-curve tapering; on a 35W adapter the constant-current phase finishes appreciably sooner. Going beyond about 45W buys nothing — the iPad simply does not request it, exactly as described in can I use a higher-wattage charger.
The case where the adapter really is too small
An iPad under load is not a passive battery: a Pro running a video export, a graphics-heavy game, or an external display over USB-C can consume 15–25W on its own. Plug that into a 12W USB-A brick and the input does not cover the draw, so the battery percentage falls while the cable is connected. This is the origin of most "my iPad is not charging" reports, and it is arithmetic rather than a fault — the fix is an adapter above the device's working consumption, which for a Pro means 30W or more.
The same logic applies to accessories. The Magic Keyboard's pass-through USB-C port is charge-only and does not carry data, and everything hanging off a hub — SSDs, card readers, a wired mic — is drawing from the same budget. Feed a working iPad through a hub from a 20W brick and you are dividing a small pie.
Protocol notes that save money
iPads negotiate ordinary fixed-rail USB-C PD — typically 9V or 15V — and ignore PPS entirely, so a charger's PPS range is irrelevant to an all-Apple household. No iPad needs an e-marked cable either, because none of them approach 3A on a 9V or 15V rail; a plain 60W-class cable is fine, and the cable guide explains where that stops being true. Can I charge an iPad with an iPhone charger?
Yes — a 20W iPhone brick charges any iPad safely, just not quickly on the larger models. It is the same USB-C PD contract, only a smaller one.
Will a MacBook charger charge my iPad faster?
Only up to the iPad's own ceiling, around 30–45W depending on model. A 96W adapter and a 45W adapter charge an iPad Pro at the same speed.
Why does my iPad charge so slowly overnight?
Check whether it is on a 12W USB-A adapter or an old Lightning cable, and whether Optimized Battery Charging is deliberately holding it below 100% until morning.
Do iPads need a PPS charger?
No. Apple devices use fixed PD voltage rails only. PPS matters for Samsung and Pixel hardware, not for any iPad.
