Avoiding counterfeit charger listings.
Counterfeit chargers are a safety problem, not a value problem: the isolation barrier between mains and your phone is exactly where the cost gets removed. Here is how a fake reaches a legitimate-looking listing, and the signals that predict it.
How commingled inventory works
When a seller ships stock into Fulfilment by Amazon without unique per-unit barcodes, Amazon can pool identical items under one product code in the same warehouse bin — stickerless commingling. Your order is filled from whichever unit is closest, which may not be the one your chosen seller sent. Sellers can opt out by labelling every unit with its own code, and many now do, but the listing does not show which choice was made.
This is why the seller line matters more than the review score. "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com" means Amazon is the seller of record. "Sold by [brand], fulfilled by Amazon" means the brand sells and Amazon ships — good, though still potentially commingled. "Sold by [unfamiliar name]" is where risk concentrates, especially on a premium product at an unusual price.
The signals, ranked
| Signal | What it suggests | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Current-generation brand item at 40–60% off | Strongest single red flag | High |
| Seller is not the brand or Amazon | Adds commingling and grey-market risk | High |
| Reviews describing a different product | Repurposed or hijacked listing | High |
| Large burst of reviews in a few days | Manipulated review history | Medium |
| No published PD profile table | Specification cannot be verified | Medium |
| No UL or ETL mark in the photos | No independent safety testing claimed | High |
| Brand Registry / Transparency badge present | Positive signal — per-unit codes are scanned | Positive |
Read the one- and two-star entries first, sorted by most recent. Listings degrade: a product genuine two years ago can accumulate recent reviews complaining of different packaging, a missing certification mark or a lighter brick. That divergence is the most useful pattern on the page.
What certification claims mean
A genuine UL or ETL mark means a laboratory tested a sample against a safety standard and the file is on record. A printed logo is trivially copied, so treat the mark as necessary but not sufficient: it should be moulded or printed cleanly on the housing alongside a file number, and reputable brands name their certifications in the listing. A mark that exists only in the bullet points, or in a rendered image but not a real photo, tells you nothing. What each mark covers is in charger safety and certifications.
If a counterfeit arrives
Do not plug it in — not once, not "just to test". Photograph the item, label and packaging first. Start the return from Your Orders and choose the inauthentic or counterfeit reason, not a generic one: that code routes the report internally. Report the listing through Amazon's report-a-product flow and notify the brand — most charger makers run a verification page and want the seller name and order number. If the refund stalls, a card chargeback is the backstop.
Avoiding it next time is mostly about where you shop on the page: prefer the brand or Amazon as seller, prefer published PD profiles, and be sceptical of a headline discount. Our category pages only list units with published, verifiable profiles — start at USB-C adapters, GaN chargers or the best-of roundup. If you already own a suspect unit, the heat guide lists the signs it should be retired and the recycling guide explains where to take it.
FAQ
What is commingled inventory?
An Amazon fulfilment option where identical items from different sellers share one bin without per-unit barcodes. Your order can be filled from any seller's stock, which is how a fake reaches a legitimate listing.
Does buying 'sold by Amazon.com' guarantee a genuine charger?
It substantially reduces risk because Amazon is the seller of record, but does not eliminate commingling. Combine it with the price and certification checks.
How can I tell a counterfeit charger after it arrives?
Weight — fakes are lighter, because transformer and isolation are where cost is cut. Then check the moulded certification mark, print quality, pin fit and whether output profiles are printed at all.
What should I do with a counterfeit charger I already used?
Stop using it and return it with the counterfeit reason code selected. If it ever ran hot, smelled or buzzed, treat it as unsafe even if it still works, and take it to an e-waste drop-off rather than reselling it.
