10W adapters: more amps, same 5 volts.
10W is 5V at 2A — the industry's first attempt at a tablet charger, and a dead end. Doubling current instead of raising voltage is why the standard moved to 9V rails, and why 10W bricks are now accessory chargers rather than device chargers.
Why 10W was a current story, not a voltage story
Apple's original iPad shipped with a 10W USB Power Adapter (A1357) rated 5.1V/2.1A. Every generic "2A" brick sold since copies that rail. Pushing 2A down a 5V bus works, but it is the inefficient way to move power: at fixed voltage, doubling current quadruples resistive loss in the cable and connector, and the heat lands inside the phone's charge IC rather than in the adapter.
USB-C Power Delivery fixed that by raising voltage instead — 9V at 2.22A carries 20W with less current than this 10W rail uses. That is the whole reason 10W disappeared from phone boxes.
Three things a 10W brick is genuinely good at
1. Accessory duty. Earbud cases, trackers, e-readers, dashcams, smart speakers and USB desk lamps all sit under 10W by design, so nothing is being throttled.
2. Two small devices at once. Most dual-port 10W bricks split the 2A across both ports, which is fine for two earbud cases and useless for two phones — see the note below.
3. Overnight phone charging. If a phone sits on a nightstand for eight hours, 10W finishes the job with less heat than a fast charge. Our overnight charging guide covers what that does and does not do for battery health.

Sizing up, and when 10W is already plenty
10W is overkill for nothing but earbuds — even there it costs nothing. Size up if you own a tablet or any phone made after about 2018. The honest ladder is 12W for the fastest USB-A rail there is, 18W for the first Power Delivery step, or 20W for the current phone standard. Step back to 5W only for a watch puck. FAQ
Is a 10W charger fast enough for a tablet?
It will keep a tablet topped up but not fast-charge it. Tablets pull 12W to 30W, so 10W mostly matches consumption while the screen is on and only gains ground when the tablet is asleep.
What is the difference between 10W and 12W?
About half a volt and 0.4A. 12W bricks hold 5.2V at 2.4A using Apple's D+/D− current signalling, which is the highest a plain USB-A port goes without a proprietary protocol.
Can a 10W adapter fast-charge a phone?
No. Fast charging on any modern phone requires the adapter to offer a 9V or higher rail through USB-C PD or a vendor protocol. A 10W brick only ever offers 5V.
