Switzerland: the socket that rejects the German plug.
Swiss sockets are Type J at 230V / 50Hz — three round pins with the earth offset from the line between the two power pins. It is the one European outlet where a grounded Schuko plug simply will not go in, and the reason travellers with a perfectly good German adapter still end up buying a second one in Zurich.
Why Type F does not fit Type J
Type J and Type F are both three-conductor, both 230V, and both use round pins. They are still incompatible, for two independent reasons.
The earth is in the wrong place. Schuko earths through two metal clips on the rim of a round recess, gripping flats on the sides of the plug. The Swiss socket earths through a third round hole, offset from the line joining the two power holes. There is no clip for Schuko to grab and no hole where Schuko expects contact.
The body is the wrong shape. The Swiss recess is cut close around the plug profile, so the wider round Schuko body does not enter far enough for its pins to reach the contacts. Forcing it achieves nothing; it stops several millimetres out.

What runs on Swiss mains as-is
The input line printed on the charger settles it: 100–240V ~ 50/60Hz. Every USB-C charger sold in the US is built to that range, and so is every laptop brick, camera battery charger, drone charger and electric toothbrush base of the last decade. On Swiss electricity they deliver full rated output — a 100W GaN charger still hands a MacBook Pro 100W.
The genuine exceptions are single-voltage devices that make heat or spin a motor: a US hair dryer, a curling iron, a flat iron, a travel kettle. Their labels read 120V with no range, they pull 1,000–1,800W, and they fail the instant they see 230V. Does a European adapter work in Switzerland?
A two-pin Type C Europlug adapter does. A grounded Schuko (Type F) adapter does not - the Swiss Type J socket puts its earth contact in a different position and its recess is too tight for the wider Schuko body.
Is Swiss voltage different from the rest of Europe?
No. Switzerland runs 230V at 50Hz like its neighbours. Only the socket geometry is different, which is why the fix is a plug adapter and never a voltage converter.
Can I plug a US laptop charger into a Swiss socket?
Yes, through a Type C or Type J adapter. Laptop bricks are 100-240V devices; check the label to confirm, then only the plug shape needs changing.
Why does Switzerland use its own plug?
It standardised on its own national system, SEV 1011, before European harmonisation, and kept it. The one concession is that Swiss sockets accept the Type C Europlug, which is what makes travelling there manageable.
