The best airline-safe chargers of 2026.
Two numbers govern what flies: 100 watt-hours, under which a lithium power bank needs no permission, and 160 watt-hours, above which it is refused outright. Wall chargers have no battery and therefore no limit at all — the rules only bite once a cell is involved.
The rules, in the order they matter
Lithium batteries, including every power bank, must travel in the cabin: checked baggage is prohibited for spare cells, because a thermal event in the hold cannot be reached. Under 100Wh a bank needs no approval; between 100Wh and 160Wh it needs airline approval and is typically limited to two units per passenger; above 160Wh it is not accepted at all on passenger aircraft.
Converting a capacity label: watt-hours equal milliamp-hours multiplied by cell voltage, divided by 1,000. At the usual 3.6V to 3.7V cell voltage, a 20,000mAh bank is roughly 74Wh and a 27,000mAh bank is close to 100Wh — which is why 27,000mAh is the largest capacity commonly sold as flight-friendly. A plain wall charger contains no cell and is unrestricted in either bag.
Carrier rules diverge on top of that. Several airlines have added requirements about keeping power banks out of overhead bins and restricting their use in flight, so check your carrier's dangerous-goods page before you fly — the thresholds are near-universal, the handling rules are not.

Can I put a power bank in checked luggage?
No. Spare lithium batteries, including power banks, must travel in the cabin. Only devices with batteries installed may be checked, and airlines discourage even that.

About 74Wh: multiply the milliamp-hour figure by the cell voltage of roughly 3.7V and divide by 1,000.
Are wall chargers restricted on flights?
